Cassie Bell of St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary is one of only four students selected from across the country to represent Canada in Italy next month.

Bell, who is in Grade 11, will fly Nov. 29 for a week-long series of educational events to mark the 75th anniversary of the Italian Campaign, a part of the allied invasion of Europe in World War II.

“I'm just happy to be able to pay my respects and honour those that have sacrificed so much for us. It's going to be a really powerful experience,” said Bell, who lives in Chilliwack. Some of her family members fought in the Second World War.

“I have always had an interest in history. I love learning about social studies and I thought this would be an amazing experience.”

The trip is organized by Veteran Affairs Canada and invites delegates to participate in ceremonies at the Price of Peace monument, Canadian Heroes Square, and the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery in Italy.

Canadian Veterans will also be part of the delegation. More than 93,000 Canadians played a role in the Italian Campaign military effort.

Family members, teachers, and classmates “are very happy for me,” Bell said.
