As 2024 dawned on the world, Archbishop J. Michael Miller urged the faithful to keep their gaze fixed on Jesus Christ, the “Sun rising on the horizon of humanity” and the “hope and Saviour of the world.”

In his New Year’s letter to Catholics in the Vancouver archdiocese, the Archbishop expressed gratitude for God’s merciful love and providential care over the past year.

Acknowledging the ephemeral nature of human life and the longing for meaning that lies deep in the human heart, he said the answer to life’s deepest questions was written on the face of the Child born of the Virgin Mary.

Through Jesus’ incarnation in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago to free mankind from sin and death, time itself has been “touched” by God, the Archbishop said. “The time we are now living is the definitive time of salvation and grace,” he said. As a result, 2024 will be yet another “Year of the Lord.”

While the old year passes away, the Archbishop entrusted his flock once again to God’s care, asking the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, to intercede for the faithful before “the throne of mercy.”

Offering his blessing and best wishes for the new year to all families in the archdiocese, he invited Catholics to join him in keeping their gaze fixed on Jesus, the “Sun rising on the horizon of humanity” and the source of hope for the world.
