The Oblate community paid its respects to Father Terry Conway May 4 at a funeral Mass at St. Augustine’s in Vancouver.

Father Conway died April 16 at Vancouver General Hospital at age 81.

Father Conway was born in Pembroke, Ont., in 1942 and grew up in Barry’s Bay, Ont. He studied philosophy at the Oblates’ Holy Rosary Scholasticate in Ottawa and theology at St. Paul University.

He studied pastoral counselling at the Vatican II Institute in Menlo Park, Calif., and professed his first vows in 1962 and his perpetual vows in 1965. He was ordained a priest in the Congregation of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate on Sept. 14, 1968, in St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Barry’s Bay.

Over the decades Father Conway served in Powell River, Duncan, Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, and at St. Augustine’s in Vancouver.

He also served in many positions for the Oblates including director of the Missionary Association of Mary Immaculate (MAMI) and as a mission/retreat preacher. He was administrator of St. Anthony’s in Agassiz for a time, president and treasurer of St. Paul’s Continuing Care Foundation, and Chair of the OMI Lacombe Canada Finance Committee.

He was also an accomplished musician who played piano, organ, and guitar and enjoyed singing and sharing jokes.

Interment followed at the Oblate Cemetery in Mission.
