Are we as willing as the Blessed Virgin to answer God’s call?
by Msgr. Pedro Lopez-Gallo

The whole world has already adorned its premises with lights, soft music and fervent prayers. And it all started with the birth of the Baby Jesus: “This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: While Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to a son” (Lk. 2:6).

At this point, allow me to ask – what does the Christmas season mean to you? For many, it is only a family gathering with the exchange of gifts and a superb dinner; for others, a devout Mass with carols and prayers; but for you, my dear reader, what will this Christmas be for you?

I would like for it to signify a new and spiritual relationship with God. Look at the beautiful history of Mary, Joseph and Jesus – a young lady, betrothed to a man named Joseph (an important factor since he was of the house of David). Mary was a virgin, and therefore perturbed by the words of the Angel Gabriel: “Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.” And the Angel continued, saying, “Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and must name him Jesus, and he will be called Son of the Most High.” Mary replied, “But how can this come about since I am a virgin?” (Lk. 1:28-34).

Stop for a moment. Go to a place where you are alone, and listen to the voice of God telling you: “You are my favoured one! Between you and me, there will be a special relationship. Do not be afraid. Yes, you are called to be my special child.”

I hope your answer is a sincere and loving “Yes, Lord, I want to do your will.” Meditate on the fact that Jesus was born in the night, in the silence, with his mother cuddling him and singing a lullaby. From now on you will start a new life full of joy because God is love, and love is harmony and peace.

Of course Mary and Jesus suffered, and you also will have tortures that could afflict your soul. Be strong. Remember Jesus looking at his beloved town Jerusalem, at the distress of his people, and weeping. But he also experienced the joy of His Resurrection as you also will, knowing that you will be with Him in Paradise!

Do not forget that Mary, Joseph and Jesus were a loving, caring family unit. What is your status as a member of your family? Are you trying to create what St. John Paul II called “the domestic Church” where God reigns?

Have a wonderful, loving, and holy Christmas.
