Saints Peter Canisius (1521-1597) and Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621) were both Jesuit theologians who wrote catechisms and were involved in apostolate works. They were both declared Doctors of the Church by Pope Pius XI.

Peter Canisius was born May 8, 1521, in Holland. After making the spiritual exercises under the guidance of St. Peter Faber, he entered the Society of Jesus on May 8, 1543.

Peter earned a doctorate in theology in 1549 and St. Ignatius of Loyola assigned him to carry out the apostolate in Germany.

Before he set out for Germany, Peter Canisius received the apostolic blessing from Pope Paul III. He had a profound spiritual experience, which he described in these words: “Eternal High Priest, you allowed me in your boundless goodness to commend the fruit and confirmation of that blessing to your apostles, to whom men go on pilgrimage to the Vatican and who there work wonders under your guidance. It was there that I experienced great consolation and the presence of your grace, offered to me through these great intercessors. They too gave their blessings, and confirmed the mission to Germany; they seemed to promise their good will to me as an apostle of that country. You know, Lord, how strongly and how often you committed Germany to my care on that very day: I was to continue to be solicitous for it thereafter, I was to desire to live and die for it.”

Pope Benedict XVI commented: “We must bear in mind that we are dealing with the time of the Lutheran Reformation, at the moment when the Catholic faith in the German-speaking countries seemed to be dying out in the face of the fascination of the Reformation. The task of Canisius – charged with revitalizing or renewing the Catholic faith in the Germanic countries – was almost impossible. It was possible only by virtue of prayer. It was possible only from the centre, namely, a profound personal friendship with Jesus Christ, a friendship with Christ in his Body, the Church, which must be nourished by the Eucharist, his Real Presence.”

Peter reformed the University of Ingolstadt and administered the diocese of Vienna for a year. He visited hospitals and prisons and wrote catechisms. Pope Benedict XVI said, “There were at least 200 editions of this Catechism in his lifetime alone! And hundreds of editions succeeded one another until the 20th century. So it was that still in my father’s generation people in Germany were calling the Catechism simply ‘the Canisius.’ He really was the Catechist of Germany for centuries; he formed people’s faith for centuries.”

As superior, Peter established a dense network of communities of Jesuits in the Germanic countries, which contributed greatly to the renewal of the Catholic faith.

St. Robert Bellarmine was born on October 4, 1542, and entered the Society of Jesus on 20 September 1560.

Robert focused on St. Thomas and the Fathers of the Church in his theological studies. He was ordained a priest on March 25, 1570. He taught at the Roman College in Rome and was the spiritual director of St. Aloysius Gonzaga.

Benedictine author Father Augustine Kalberer described the life of St. Robert: “Despite poor health during most of his sixty-eight years, he seemed to have energy and talent for everything: studies, teaching, the pulpit, writing, spiritual direction, administration, and – during four years as Archbishop of Capua – pastoral care.”

Pope Benedict XVI said, “The burdensome offices of governance did not prevent him from striving daily for holiness, faithful to the demands of his own state as a religious, priest and bishop. From this fidelity came his commitment to preaching assiduously. Since as a priest and bishop he was first and foremost a pastor of souls, he felt it was his duty to preach diligently.”

Robert wrote the four-volume Disputationes de Controversiis explaining and defending the Catholic faith. His most popular work is a short catechism written from 1597 to 1598. In the catechism, the saint pointed out that the faith of Christ chiefly consists “in two principal mysteries, which are included in the Sign of the Holy Cross, that is: in the unity and Trinity of God, and in the Incarnation and Death of our Saviour.”
