Pope Francis’ lifestyle, writings, words, and actions gave me tremendous encouragement to continue my work as a lay street missionary. His words consoled me and strengthened my resolve to serve the poor. His heart for the marginalized was a model for us all.
Catholic Street Missionaries (CSM) was formed during his pontificate. With a Pope who emphasized reaching out to the margins of society, CSM was able to gather people to support the mission of bringing God’s love to the homeless through volunteering, donations, and prayer.
I still remember the moment he was elected Pope. When he chose his name in honour of St. Francis of Assisi, I knew the “wind” had turned in favour of street ministries. I was filled with joy and hope.
Shortly after becoming Pope, he visited a jail and washed the inmates’ feet. That action spoke volumes. He loved the outcast and the lost—the same people we serve on the street. His deep understanding of street ministry encouraged me greatly, and it uplifted my volunteers as well.
His gentleness, sensitivity, and compassion toward the marginalized stirred debate among some Catholics. Many voiced concern about his openness, worrying he might one day change Church teachings. But I believe it was his pastoral approach that was often misunderstood. He never wanted to turn anyone away from the Church. In my experience with street ministry, people must first experience God’s love before they can commit to following His commands. Throughout his pontificate, he did not change any Church teachings—and I never believed he would.
Below are some of the Pope’s quotes that still speak deeply to my heart:
• “Let us open our eyes to our neighbour, especially to our brothers and sisters who are forgotten and excluded, to the ‘Lazarus’ at our door.”
• “It’s love that unites.”
In 2013, I received the great and undeserved honour of the Benemerenti Medal from Pope Francis. It recognized the good work of the members of St. Mary’s Street Ministry. The honour truly belongs to all my volunteers. The medal was like a “booster shot” for everyone in St. Mary’s Street Ministry and for St. Mary’s Parish as a whole. I remain deeply grateful to Father Pierre Leblond, St. Mary’s pastor at the time, for nominating me, and to Archbishop Miller for awarding the medal.
I pray that Pope Francis is now at home, in the Father’s embrace.
