Two Grade 7 student leaders from St. Mary’s Elementary in Vancouver, attended the BC Lions Skills 4 Life ambassador program Nov. 2 and 3.

Principal Brenda Krivuzoff writes:

“Jonathan Ysonza and Keith Sediadharma, both members of the St. Mary’s Student Council, had the opportunity to meet six BC Lion players while attending the unique event targeting Grades 7-9 from every school district in the province. St. Mary’s was one of only two CISVA schools and one of four independent schools to attend the summit. All students received a complimentary BC Lions ticket for the Nov. 2 game vs. the Calgary Stampeders.

Topics discussed by former and current BC Lions players included mental wellness and self-care, ERASE (expect respect and a safe education), goal setting and education, and career choices. Students connected with each other through team-building exercises, including dragon boating, and talked about careers and continuing education options.

After the event, students were asked to share their learning experiences with their school communities. Jonathan and Keith reflected on their learning through a Catholic perspective. How can their faith and trust in God guide them with difficult situations ahead in life?

Keith said through prayer we can talk to God for help to overcome the stress and anxiety related to tests and assignments. Jonathan thought he could set career goals through the grace of God and through prayer. We can always count and trust God to guide us towards the right path.

We are grateful for our students to take part in this initiative to help them grow in their faith and be successful in achieving their future goals.”

The boys recounted their experiences to their peers at St. Mary’s Nov. 13.
