The Archdiocese of Vancouver will celebrate the Sept. 4 canonization of Mother Teresa, now St. Teresa of Kolkata, with a Sunday afternoon Mass.

“I was overjoyed to hear of her becoming a saint, because, growing up, I heard a lot about Mother Teresa,” said Father Pablo Santa Maria, an assistant pastor of Holy Rosary Cathedral, where the Mass will be celebrated. “She was such a saintly woman, and left the world behind to serve the poorest of the poor.”

Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, will celebrate the Mass Oct. 2 at 2:30 p.m. “Her canonization is a gift to the Church, and is a reminder that we need to go to those people who are on the periphery,” Father Santa Maria said. “It’s a reminder that I, as a priest, need to imitate her.”

Father Santa Maria will be the master of ceremonies for the Mass, which he sees as a way to take part in the Vatican celebrations. “A handful of priests were at the actual canonization, but not everyone can go to Rome to celebrate,” he noted. “This is a way for us to participate in the canonization from far away.”

“We participate in spirit alongside the (local) Missionaries of Charity, celebrating the great life of Mother Teresa of Kolkata.”
