Archbishop J. Michael Miller has set aside Saturday, Dec. 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, as a dedicated Day of Mercy for Catholics to recognize the need for, and availability of, the sacrament of reconciliation during Advent.

As part of the the Archdiocese of Vancouver’s Blue Light campaign of hope for the holidays, numerous opportunities are available throughout the archdiocese for people to get to confession, and a special Examination of Conscience in Time of COVID has been produced.

Confessions are allowed under current health orders, as they are private meetings between a penitent and a priest. Brett Powell, the archbishop’s delegate for development and ministries, said the intention is for each parish to work out a drive-thru, sign-up, or other system that works best for them.

“It’s time for the church to elevate Christmas as the celebration of the birth of our Saviour who can redeem everything, who can bring hope where there is utter darkness,” said Powell.

“That is our hope: that he becomes hope for all.”
