Publishing stories of faith

There will be a second collection during Masses Feb. 4-5 throughout the archdiocese for the Catholic press. This annual collection helps offset a parishes’ cost for sending The B.C. Catholic to its subscribers’ homes.

None of the money collected goes to The B.C. Catholic directly; all of it is used at the parish level.

106 years of Catholic history

Since 1911, the Catholic Press Association has supported diocesan newspapers as the papers have brought papal messages, local and international Church news, features, the news about the Vatican, and much more to their loyal readers.

The CPA’s first president, Edward J. Cooney, from the Providence Visitor, explained at the time the new organization had four major aims: to highlight interesting news to the faithful, to protest rising postal rates, to go after national advertising contracts, and to decrease the power of the secular press in Catholic matters.

Today the CPA mission statement hasn’t changed that much.

“The mission of the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada is to build and strengthen the value, effectiveness, and identity of Catholic media by facilitating the professional development and spiritual growth of our members.

“We contribute to the Church’s mission of communicating the Good News and evangelizing the modern world by engaging and supporting the content creators and distributors of Catholic media.”

With parishioners’ help, the Catholic Press will stay healthy and vital. By contributing to the Catholic Press Collection, readers can show their appreciation for receiving the paper.
