Food, mercy, and music await those who gather to celebrate St. John Paul II’s feast day Oct. 22 at All Saints Parish in Coquitlam.

Attendees will “learn about what motivated St. John Paul II, what mercy means to us, how St. John Paul saw mercy, and why it’s important to us,” said Peter Elliott, one of the organizers.

“Obviously John Paul II is a great example for anyone to follow.”

The event, which will take place in the parish gym, will include informative talks about the saint, the secondary patron saint of the archdiocese.

Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, who will be attending, “selected John Paul as our secondary patron because his life has meaning for us,” Elliott said.

“I will be giving a talk about his life, and Father Don (Larson) will also be giving a talk.”

There will also be live music performed by All Saints parishioners. “I think one key thing about the event is that it represents cooperation of many groups in the parish,” said Elliott, noting St. John Paul II’s wish for Christian unity.

“The call for Christian unity begins in the parish, and I think it will be good to see the unity of the many groups in the event’s presentation.”

The Knights of Columbus Council 5540, of which Elliott is a member, is sponsoring the event, to begin at 6 p.m.

Tickets, $20 per adult, $50 per family, are available from Elliott, 604-552-7692.
