The 10th World Meeting of Families wrapped up at the Vatican Sunday with Pope Francis reminding thousands attending Mass, “Don’t ever forget this: the family is the first place where you learn to love.

At Pacific Academy in Surrey, that love was being celebrated in a big way with families from around the archdiocese gathering for a Joy of the Family event complete with games, family fun, and food, all in celebration of the end of the Year of the Family.

More than 300 people registered for the day of fun that included rock climbing, bouncy castles, mini golf, and food served up by members of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Women’s League.

Also making an appearance was the Men in Black soccer team – made up of archdiocesan priests and seminarians – who braved the heat in matches that pitted them against the younger children and then against teens and adults.

Event organizer Michele Smillie told The B.C. Catholic that the family fun day is part of a cycle of regular family-focused events that will include conferences and retreats to help families live out their vocations.
