The Archdiocese of Vancouver has restricted former Holy Rosary Cathedral rector Father James Comey from public ministry following allegations of sexual abuse from about 1973 until about 1990.

In response to a recently filed lawsuit alleging abuse by Father Comey, Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, issued a Decree of Prohibition from the Exercise of Public Ministry on July 6, 2023, effectively removing Father Comey from active ministry.

The decree restricts Father Comey from celebrating Mass publicly and from administering other sacraments, except confession and the sacrament of the sick in cases of imminent danger of death. He is also restricted from involvement in any form of individual counselling or spiritual direction, and from contact with minors and vulnerable adults.

The decree is in accordance with the Code of Canon Law 1722 which outlines provisions a bishop can take during an investigation.

The lawsuit alleges that Father Comey sexually exploited a woman from Haida Gwaii starting around 1973 and continuing until about 1990. Father Comey retired in 2015.

In a statement to The B.C. Catholic, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese said, “We are deeply concerned about these allegations and would like to express sympathy for all victims of sexual abuse. We are fully committed to ensuring the protection and well-being of all individuals, particularly those who are vulnerable.”

The Archdiocese said it hopes coverage of the allegations will help give any other victims/survivors the confidence to come forward and get the healing they deserve.
