Gala to be held at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver Nov. 11

The Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation is planning a fundraising dinner to support the only not-for-profit university in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv was the first Ukrainian Catholic school of higher learning to be established in Ukraine; that was in 1929. The foundation, which operates in Toronto, Chicago, and Ukraine, seeks to educate North Americans about the academic and financial needs of Ukrainian Catholic educational institutions such as UCU.

“This university is a great gift for Ukraine,” said Eparch (Bishop) Ken Nowakowski of New Westminster. “This is the place where one learns and strives to make the world a better place, to strengthen one’s country, and to bring peace and joy to those who are near and dear.”

The school had its beginnings in 1929, though it was closed by the Soviets from 1944 to 1994. “This small community has endured, and it became instrumental in changing Ukrainian society,” Bishop Nowakowski said. “UCU is the only non-profit university in Ukraine; student contributions total less than 20 per cent of the overall budget.”

The gala, to be held at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver Nov. 11, is part of a long-term capital fundraising plan, he added. “Our keynote speaker will be Victor Malarek, a Canadian award-winning journalist and author and senior reporter at CTV’s W5.”

The Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation is accepting donations of items for the silent auction and monetary donations for the school.
