Monthly Movie Screening at Canadian Martyrs Parish

Canadian Martyrs Parish is hosting monthly movie screenings, each preceded by a short presentation that provides historical and theological context, followed by an optional (but highly recommended) group discussion. The goal of this event is to help us enrich our faith and to aid in our evangelistic mission as Catholics, both accomplished here through the “way of beauty” (Via Pulchritudinis), particularly through the art of cinema. The films screened are carefully curated, with particular emphasis on artistic merit and substantial communication of elements of truth, goodness, and beauty.

Whether you’re a seasoned cinephile who has watched the entire oeuvre of Ozu and Bresson, or just a casual moviegoer, we encourage you to attend! Screenings are held monthly – typically on the first Sunday of each month, except in the summer, and subject to change depending on special occasions, feasts, and solemnities.

Next Screening

We will resume our monthly movies this September with a screening of another Vatican Film List entry: Chariots of Fire. Perhaps best known for Vangelis’ synthesizer-heavy score, the film explores what it means to “put God at the centre of our lives” as we are often implored to do, using the 1924 Summer Olympics as the backdrop. The film is categorized under “Values” in the Vatican Film List, and it won the Academy Award for Best Picture during its year of release. As usual, the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) and the Canadian Martyrs Prayer Community (CMPC) will serve food/snacks before and during the screening.

Films previously screened include the following:

• Toy Story 3 (dir. Unkrich)
• It’s a Wonderful Life (dir. Capra)
• Of Gods and Men (dir. Beauvois)
• Singin’ in the Rain (dir. Kelly and Donen)
• I Confess (dir. Hitchcock)
• The Passion of the Christ (dir. Gibson)
• Revenge of the Sith (dir. Lucas)
• Modern Times (dir. Chaplin)
• Life is Beautiful (dir. Roberto Benigni)
• Spirited Away (dir. Hayao Miyazaki)
