The Archbishop of Vancouver has authorized a special collection to help earthquake victims in Ecuador.
A quake that measured 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Ecuador April 16. A state of emergency was declared as hundreds were killed and thousands more were injured or left in desperate need for help.
“I invite you to contribute to this emergency humanitarian campaign,” wrote Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, in a letter dated May 1.
The special collection will be held at all Masses May 7-8. The funds will go to relief efforts by the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace and Caritas Ecuador.
“The faithful of the Archdiocese of Vancouver have consistently responded to humanitarian appeals. During this Year of Mercy, when we place special emphasis on the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, I ask you to be as generous as possible at this time of need for the people of Ecuador.”
