DELTA—Six seminarians paid a visit on board two massive transport ships, thanks to the Apostleship of the Sea ministry.

The two field trips (taking three seminarians at a time) were arranged by port chaplain Deacon Dileep Athaide, who climbs into ships at ports near Vancouver to give seafaring crews spiritual and practical help. He also delivers prayer books, rosaries, and other Catholic resources, and leaves the crew with a blessing.

“Seafarers often work in the periphery of society and not many people know about what they do, so port chaplaincy is a powerful example of the Church reaching out to those on the margins,” said Deacon Athaide.

He added that a few of the seminarians “told me that they look forward to the possibility of serving as priest-chaplains someday.”
