VANCOUVER—Grade 8 students got a special lesson in wood carving from Brent Sparrow at his studio on the Musqueam First Nation Oct. 18. The son of First Nation artist Susan Point, Sparrow is working on a new piece of art for St. Patrick's school.

Sparrow, a welder by trade and carver since 2009, is transforming a red cedar log into a carving of a woman holding a salmon. It will be put on display at the entrance of St. Patrick's.

During the visit, he taught the students about First Nations art and how to hold a knife when carving wood. Some even got to try.
