A unique partnership between a children’s centre and a dementia care home is bringing Christmas joy to many seniors this year.

The Montessori Children’s Community in Vancouver shares a street address with Youville Residence, a Catholic care home for about 42 adults with dementia and other illnesses.

“It means a great deal to me to see kids. I don’t see them that often,” said 82-year-old Youville resident Madeleine Kearns. “It makes me feel glad, and glad that I’m here.”

This month, the children walked down the hallway to Youville to sing carols, create Christmas tree ornaments, and interact with their elderly neighbours.

“It was lovely,” said Kearns. She enjoyed watching the children decorate the community tree and listening to them sing. “It meant a lot.”

Six-year-old Kingston enjoyed the opportunity as well. “I like coming back to say hello to the seniors I know,” he said. “I enjoyed being with them today. I hope they have a very good Merry Christmas.”

Young Leona agreed. “I like seeing the residents very much,” she said. “Merry Christmas, and maybe another word: ‘I love you.’”

Youville staff have found not only does having children nearby bring cheer to the residents, but using the Montessori educational method with people with dementia can increase their independence and quality of life.
