Inca Siojo’s layout of “Simone’s Camino” won first place in newspaper feature layout and design from the Canadian Church Press awards.
The B.C. Catholic won five journalism awards at the Canadian Church Press convention in Winnipeg May 2.
The publication took first place in the newspaper feature layout and design category for “Simone’s Camino,” which was designed by production coordinator Inca Siojo and written by Agnieszka Ruck. The feature chronicled the lifelong dream of a Vancouver woman to travel to Calcutta and work with Mother Teresa’s nuns. The judge called it “a perfect layout” and “an engaging read.”
The newspaper took second-place honours in the in-depth treatment category for “Pioneering Congregation Wraps Up Mission,” in which Ruck relates the legacy of the Sisters of St. Ann, a congregation older than Canada itself, whose numbers have dwindled.
The newspaper also took three third-place awards; one for C.S. Morrissey’s Global Theatre columns, another for Siojo’s front-page layout of a feature by Ruck on Syrian refugees entitled “Settling In,” and a third for Ruck’s feature “A Cup of Kindness, 50 Years Later,” in which she relates a random act of kindness at the Catholic Charities Men’s Hostel that helped a homeless, abused, drug-selling teenager turn his life around.
The Canadian Church Press is an association of Christian
publications offering support to members and working to maintain high standards
of religious journalism. The CCP is one of the most active and broadly based
ecumenical organizations in Canada.
