New Year’s resolutions may already have become a thing of the past for some of us, but the calendar is only just about to turn for those celebrating Lunar New Year.
We asked some local Catholics who are looking forward to the occasion to share their thoughts on the pandemic, the new year ahead, and where they see God in all of it. Here’s what they shared with us.
The Lunar New Year begins Feb. 12. Learn more about how local Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese Catholics are celebrating here.
Faith, Chinese New Year, and the pandemic
By Paul Li
Coquitlam
The transition of Chinese New Year is certainly different this year. Still in the coronavirus pandemic, I do not know what to hope for in the New Year of the Ox, even if I have faith in God. Although I trust in God and in his plan, I cannot understand it with my limited wisdom.
With personal protection equipment and God’s blessing, I am not infected. But should I take the vaccine to protect myself and my family? Since I am close to retirement, should I reflect on why I ought to survive for more years and what to do in those years? Should I consider what to do to enrich my life in the next 10 years or more? Maybe, but what about my plans that I have put off in order to pursue my personal achievements and ambitions?
Should I live my life in better ways? Should I share with my friends what I know about life, such as my relationships, dreams, and Catholic faith? Should I discuss with the young people of Hong Kong what I know about social changes in the world?
What I know about human relationships includes love and friendship. Thanks to God, I am loved by my parents, relatives, teachers, friends, and students, as well as my wife and son. When I give my love to, and receive love from, my wife, my soulmate, I feel the love and romance.
As for my dreams, understanding history and learning science are now my favourites. The next chapter of my life appears to be learning how history, which evolves over failures, changes, and progress, may be applied to predict the years after the pandemic. These years may be comparable to those during the Renaissance that occurred after the plague in medieval times.
Being satisfied with my human relationships and dreams, I understand more about my life. This will help to strengthen my faith in God. Surely, my faith is not weakened by the coronavirus. Because my solitude time is increased by the lockdown and social distancing policy, I feel my heart has more space to be close to God.
In the New Year, while society has a lot of stress and frustration and we hope to get over the pandemic soon, we must still listen to God for what we can do for ourselves and for others.

Light shines in darkness

The world is troubled by the pandemic. Many cried out:
How long, O Lord? Wilt thou forget me for ever?
How long wilt thou hide thy face from me?
How long must I bear pain in my soul,
and have sorrow in my heart all the day? (Psalms 13:1-2)
The Lord could have sighed:
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8-9)
The earth [keeps bringing] forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. (Genesis 1:12)
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
Despite the lockdown, the Church Never Stops. Many faithful have developed the habit of attending virtual daily Mass, and the universal Church benefits from worldwide spiritual nourishments. The B.C. Catholic reported that viewership of online Masses is going through the roof: “From Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday, livestream services drew an impressive 167,000 views. Considering many of those views would have consisted of more than a single viewer, the actual number of people who took in virtual services is likely several times larger … a recent Lenten retreat that had been aiming for about 100 participants before it was forced to become an online event ended up ministering to more than 900 viewers.”
The 135-strong St. Francis Xavier parish Bible Study Group that has gone virtual attracted dozens of new members to study God’s word, some from as far as Toronto, New York, and San Francisco. The Catholic Evangelization: Cantonese Opera Troupe which used to pay monthly visits to a senior care home in China town produced a Lunar New Year video to bring God’s love and the Gospel to the seniors.
The Lord said, “Do not fear or be dismayed.” (Joshua 8:1)
For he [the Lord] knows our frame;
he remembers that we are dust.
As for man, his days are like grass;
he flourishes like a flower of the field;
for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more.
But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
upon those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments. (Psalms 103:14-18)

Lord of wind and sea
By Mark Siu
Richmond
On Jan. 30, the Gospel reading at Mass was taken from the Gospel of St Mark (4:35-41). It described Jesus crossing the Sea of Galilee at night with the apostles in a boat, which suddenly met with a violent gale, whipping up huge waves. Jesus clamed the situation with a simple command.
Simon Peter and a handful of apostles were experienced fishermen, used to fishing at night on the Sea of Galilee and with in-depth knowledge of the surroundings and the local weather. Yet, the sudden howling windstorm and the raging waves scared the apostles, not knowing how to prevent the boat from being swamped. In their desperation, they pleaded for the help of Jesus who was sound asleep on a cushion in the stern. Outside one’s comfort zone and facing the moment of life and death beyond one’s control, people will often turn to God.
In mid-July 2019, I caught pneumonia (not COVID-19). I was transferred directly from Emergency to the hospital’s ICU, surviving on a respirator, kidney dialysis machine, and other life-sustaining equipment. Thanks to the attentive care of doctors, nursing staff, and my wife, in addition to prayers from many friends, I slowly improved and fully recovered in October of that year.
At the start, I lay on the sick bed due to the lack of strength and could not speak properly. I could only watch the medication dripping drop by drop from a bag hung next to the bed. A strong sense of helplessness filled my mind, firstly because this was the first time I was hospitalized since birth more than seven decades ago; secondly because I lost my self-reliance. Like a baby, I needed the help of young nurses for simple personal things, like going to the bathroom or cleaning up.
Just like the apostles inside a crushing storm, I suddenly remembered Lord Jesus and began to pray to him.
If I might not leave the hospital alive, I prayed that God would forgive my sins and short-comings and would pardon my failures to carry my cross continuously and whole-heartedly. I hoped for the mercy of God and the intercession of Mother Mary to enable the little boat carrying my soul to sail through the wicked sea of sins and arrive safely on the distant shore.
“If I might have a second life, the Lord of Sea and Sky, the Lord of Wind and Flame, I would be here to listen to your calling and guidance,” I prayed.
“In the future, I would also read your Word more and practise your teachings.”
In the spring of 2020, thanks to God, I fully recovered with no need for a walking cane to move about.
My brothers and sisters who have been troubled by COVID-19, please get rid of your depressions and have faith in God. Lord Jesus, who loves us and listens to our intercessory prayers, will rebuke the disastrous waves of COVID-19.
Finally, I wish everyone the New Year of the Ox abundantly filled with God’s grace and good health.

Lunar New Year in the pandemic: a poem
By Mable and Eddy Ho
Richmond
Chinese New Year used to be lively and busy. However, the New Year in the pandemic has become deserted.
The pandemic is ruthless, but people are affectionate!
This New Year, there will be no lively and happy gatherings, but there will be heartfelt wishes through separation. The pandemic has made us feel the sadness of isolation. But as far as we are staying alive, with the Love of God, we will prevail and be united again even better than before.

Mừng Xuân Tân Sửu 2021
By Hoai Chau Nguyen
Surrey
Thánh lễ cầu bình an cho thế giới.
Lão niên xin hồn an xác mạnh.
Trẻ thơ mong thoải mái vui chơi.
Gia đình xum vầy mâm cao thấp,
Bạn bè họp mặt chén đầy vơi.
Đợi mỏi, đợi mòn Chúa Xuân ơi!
Chúc mừng năm mới và trân trọng kính chào.

Celebrating the Year of the Ox 2021
By Father Tien Tran
Every year the Our Lady of La Vang Vietnamese Community at St. Matthew’s in Surrey would celebrate Vietnamese New Year with a solemn Mass, followed by festivities including delicious authentic Vietnamese foods, dragon dance, firecrackers, entertainment, and games.
The celebration would draw close to a thousand faithful from surrounding areas. This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, such activities could not be done. However, we still celebrate Lunar New Year in different ways to bring some festive spirit to the Vietnamese Community.
We have recorded a video with greetings from the priest and community’s representative, as well as New Year’s entertainment for everyone to enjoy at home.
Traditionally, Vietnamese New Year is celebrated at least for the first three days. On New Year’s Day, a solemn Mass is celebrated to give thanks to God and pray for a good new year. The Mass on the second day is dedicated to prayer for parents and ancestors. And the Mass on the third day is to pray for good works through the year.
This year, Lunar New Year falls on the weekend, so on New Year’s Day, Friday Feb. 12, 2021, we will have a New Year’s Mass at 7 p.m. at St. Matthew’s.
On Saturday, the second day of the new year, we will have a Mass at 11 a.m. People are invited to drive to the church afterward to receive Holy Communion and then have holy blessings (in the form of scriptural verses) to take home to live throughout the year. We also have lucky money in red envelopes to give to the children. And for a festive New Year’s touch, we may have a dragon dance if the weather allows!
Although we cannot gather to celebrate Lunar New Year as a community, Vietnamese families will certainly be enjoying the holiday in other ways, including festive celebrations at home.
