Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On this World Mental Health Day, I want to offer a word of encouragement and a promise of prayer to all those across the Archdiocese of Vancouver who are living with mental health challenges, as well as to their families, friends, caregivers, and those who accompany them.
Mental health struggles can be deeply painful, and often they are carried quietly. No one should have to walk that journey alone. Every person is loved by God and deserves to be met with compassion and hope.
It is especially meaningful that Pope Leo XIV has entrusted the Church with this intention for October: that mental health ministry be established throughout the Church, helping to overcome the stigma and discrimination experienced by persons with mental illnesses. This intention speaks directly to our mission here in Vancouver.
As Mental Health Ministries start to develop in our parishes, I pray that they will increasingly become places where people feel safe to speak honestly and share the burdens they may be carrying.
To those who are struggling, please know that you are not alone. I will be praying for you, and I ask the faithful throughout our Archdiocese to do the same.
May Our Lady, Mother of Hope, continue to embrace us, holding especially those who are brokenhearted, and present our prayers to her son, Jesus.
With my prayer and blessing,
✠ Richard W. Smith
Archbishop of Vancouver
