Way of the Cross set for Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver

The path of Christ’s crucifixion will be among the flowers at Queen Elizabeth Park this Easter season.

“It is important to celebrate the Way of the Cross because we become more deeply present to the definitive events and people of Jesus’s suffering and death,” said Ryle Brual, one of the coordinators of the event. Celebrating the Way of the Cross helps individuals “become more intimately united with Him and each other.”

Communion and Liberation, a lay ecclesial movement, will host the event on Good Friday. “The Via Crucis event is a touchstone in the history of Communion and Liberation celebrated publicly in much the same way throughout the world,” Brual said.

“Ordinarily a destination for tourists and wedding photographers, Queen Elizabeth Park becomes transformed into a place of passionate commemoration,” said Brual. “Over the past few years it has been quite moving to participate and behold a community of believers following the Cross in prayerful, silent reflection.”

Christ’s crucifixion falls into the theme of mercy declared by Pope Francis as the theme for a holy jubilee year. “In this year of Mercy, we hope all will know and proclaim with Pope Francis that ‘The privileged place of encounter is the caress of Jesus’s mercy,'” Brual concluded.

He invited all Catholics and anyone interested in the event to attend. The Stations of the Cross will start at 10 a.m. at Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park on Good Friday, March 25.
