From Abbotsford to Powell River, advocates for human life are preparing for a silent, prayerful event.

“Life Chain is our Christian prayer by people of good will who believe in (the sanctity) of life,” said Nancy Lim, a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Burnaby. “It’s a prayerful witness to respect for life.”

The Life Chain event, organized by local pro-life groups across the Lower Mainland, involves participants silently praying for 90 minutes Oct. 2 while holding signs of support and love.

“We have a code of conduct of no speaking, and we hold posters with prayerful and joyous messages, as well as phone numbers to call for help,” Lim said.

This will be the 29th year of Life Chain’s existence, and it continues to make a difference, Lim said.

“We know for a fact there have been both men and women who avoided abortion as a result of Life Chain,” she explained. “When they saw the Life Chain, the power of prayer transformed their hearts and they ended up raising their children.”

The men and women approached members of Life Chain afterwards, letting them know their work had affected them.

“The peace and grace you feel while praying is very joyful, and you want to proclaim life is so precious always.”

Many individuals, immigrants especially, do not realize how little regulation there is of abortion in Canada, said Lim, so Life Chain also seeks to educate. “A lot of people do not realize there are no laws to protect a baby in the womb: that in the whole nine months it can be aborted.”
