Church in Vancouver will greet new members of the presbyterate
The B.C. Catholic
The Archdiocese of Vancouver is about to become two priests richer.
Deacons Lucio Choi and Mark McGuckin are scheduled to be ordained at the hands of Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, in Holy Rosary Cathedral May 14.
“I feel a great sense of confidence and peace about taking this next step in my life,” Deacon McGuckin said.
The priest-to-be was once a lukewarm Catholic with a career in the film industry. On the verge of finishing a major project, he had a crisis: despite his success, he felt empty.
“There was this void. It was really frustrating because I thought I was fulfilling my life the way I saw fit, but there was a huge thing that was missing.”
He decided to give religion a better look. At age 28, he understood he was called to the priesthood.
Deacon Choi had a desire to wear the Roman collar from a younger age.
“I felt called when I was in Grade 4,” he said. Born in Seoul, he admired the assistant pastor of his parish and would ask God in prayer if he could become like that priest. “I didn’t know this would come true!”
He moved to Calgary with his family in 1999 and entered minor seminary in Grade 12.
The two will be ordained May 14 at 12 p.m. and be the third and fourth priests to be ordained in Holy Rosary Cathedral this litugical year. Fathers Larry Lynn and Davide Lanzani were ordained in December.
