VANCOUVER--A newly refurbished bus stood in the circular courtyard of Columbus Residence in Vancouver on the afternoon of Oct. 26, ready to take the seniors living at the residence on excursions to all kinds of exciting places.

All that was needed for the bus to pull out of the driveway was for Father John Horgan, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, to bless the vehicle, which he did on the 21st anniversary of the opening of the facility in 1990.

A gift of Columbus board member David Chang on behalf of himself and his sister Diana, the bus was donated in memory of their parents.

Father Horgan described Columbus Residence, which has facilities for seniors living independently as well as for those who need assisted care, as a family home where all who live, work, and volunteer are knitted together in the very same way as any family in any house.

Like the Holy Family who cared so much for each other, said Father Horgan, Columbus Residence is a place where people truly care for each other and respect each other for their shared gifts, strengths, and talents.

“His words refreshed and re-energized our staff and volunteers,” said Holly Martin, administrative coordinator of Columbus.

“Everyone went away feeling blessed and reminded that we are to follow Christ’s mandate to care, love, and respect all who enter our home.”
