Although it’s the time of year when schools are usually putting together Christmas concerts and pageants, a couple of Catholic schools recently opted for a more theatrical and less festive approach to their stage offerings.

Both St. John Brebeuf Secondary in Abbotsford and the Seminary of Christ the King in Mission mounted dramatic productions based on historical legends.

At SJB, students performed the musical Anastasia, based on the Broadway musical inspired by a 1997 animated film, itself based on a 1956 film and the original 1954 play. The show centres on rumours that Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna survived the execution of her family by the Bolsheviks in 1918.

At the Seminary of Christ the King, students presented Robert of Sicily, a 1970 work by playwright Margaret Wood based on the English legend of Robert of Sicily, an arrogant king who is taught a lesson by a visiting angel.
